Black Country Lives: Unique audio series begins

This new series of audio podcasts explores the fascinating and unique world of the Black Country – at the centre of Britain and at the heart of the UK’s industrial heritage.

Guided by local historians, the programmes enter a world where people struggle to survive in the harshest conditions; where men, women and young children work in the dark of dangerous mines or around fiery furnaces. We also visit pubs where the talk is of bare knuckle fights and join workers striking for fair wages.

The programmes look beyond this stereotypical picture of the Black Country and listeners meet entrepreneurs whose technical innovations were recognised around the globe and reveal artists and writers who captured the beauty of this complex region.
